Quoting the great Montanist heretic Tertullian I see :D Just messing with you. Great Saint, and a great example for our life. I read that the first Christian monks came after the last great persecutions of Christians in Rome. The reason being that monasticism was a new, living martyrdom that could even be carried out in times of peace. Interesting to hear that same thing happening in the earliest days of the church as well.
